We are pleased to announce that IP Infusion has successfully completed Phase-2 of the IP Over DWDM (IPoDWDM) Proof of Concept (PoC). This PoC activity was part of the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) Open Optical & Packet Transport (OOPT) project group, carried out under the guidance of the MANTRA (Metaverse Ready Architectures for Open Transport) subgroup. The PoC was executed in IP Infusion’s lab.
The main objective of the IPoDWDM architecture is to connect and combine two distinct rapidly evolving open technologies, IP routers and Optical Line Systems (OLS), thus enhancing network efficiency and multivendor interoperability, and bringing reductions in CAPEX and OPEX.
Phase-1 consisted of demonstrating CMIS interoperability between the switch and the optical module. The switch comprises open networking hardware provided by UfiSpace and IP Infusion provided the OcNOS router software. Coherent ZR+ pluggable modules were provided by Ciena and NEC. Our Phase-1 blog can be found here.
Phase-2 extended the Phase-1 functionalities to demonstrate the same CMIS capabilities using NetConf OpenConfig data models and showcase streaming telemetry capabilities of data retrieved from Coherent ZR+ optical modules.
PoC Scope:
PoC Topology:
Participants in this POC are:
- IP Infusion provided its OcNOS routing software and set up the lab in its office to host the PoC
- UfiSpace provided ZR/ZR+ capable open networking hardware platforms
- Ciena and NEC provided their CMIS compliant coherent ZR+ optical modules
This initiative brings together leading telecommunications companies, including Vodafone, Telefonica, MTN, Orange, Telia Company, NTT Group, and Deutsche Telekom, to explore this technology’s potential benefits.
A detailed report will be published by TIP, which we will discuss at the Fyuz conference in Dublin in November.
